Are you looking for real ways that work for stay-at-home moms? This list contains only jobs that I’ve used to support my family from home.
According to Forbes, one in five Americans currently work from home, and that number is only expected to grow.
When I first started looking for ways to make side money, I found an abundance of posts with lists of sites to find online work. Unfortunately, a lot of them were taking surveys that didn’t pay hardly anything or sites where you have to spend money and then earn money back for your purchase.

I tout the benefits of rebates all day long. But, the point of making money online was that I didn’t have any money, and I wanted some. I’ll tell you right now that surveys are not my thing. My sister has been taking surveys for years and still takes them, but she has a system. When I first tried surveys, I would get lost in all the hubbub and the next thing I’d know, I’d have spent hours on a site and made less than a dollar.
That’s when my sister told me her secret to making the most amount of money in the least amount of time with surveys. I’m not going to list surveys as an option in this post because I’ve never relied on them to make me any real money. But, you can read here about how my sister makes money each month from survey sites spending less than an hour a day.
Also, I’ve never worked any at-home jobs that require phone calls. As an introvert, I don’t like talking to strangers. The idea of having to talk on the phone to people I don’t know for hours every day is equivalent to being tortured for hours every day.Find an online job that works for you. I’ve been making a living from my living room since September of 2013. I’ve had my ups and downs. There have been times when I wanted to pull my hair out, call it quits, and burn my computer. There have been times when I’ve giggled like a school girl because an off-the-wall idea actually panned out. All-in-all, I wouldn’t change it. I found out pretty early on that I love to write. I write Fantasy novels, I write mom-related nonfiction, heck, I even write about writing. It’s the one thing other than parenthood and being a wife that I love more than anything else.
That is what will help you accomplish a working from home career. Find an online job that works for you. If you enjoy what you do, you are far more likely to succeed. If you don’t like the work, your heart will never be in it. So, if you’re transcribing, or testing websites, or selling on eBay and you really like what you’re doing, you are far more likely to make a decent living at it than if you’re doing something that you can’t stand.
Now that you know what I didn’t do to make money from home, let’s get to what actually has worked for me. I’m not saying that all of these will work for you, but they’re at least worth looking into. I’ve put them in order of which ones I’ve had the most success.
Online Jobs That Really Work for Stay-at-Home Moms
Yeah, I’m sure you probably already guessed this one. The truth is that blogging has the potential to make the most amount of money. For moms, it’s perfect. You can work on your blog during naptime, after the kids are in bed, or even while they’re getting their daily Sesame Street fix. As long as you use your time efficiently, you can get a lot done on a blog in just a few hours a day.
However, while blogging is convenient and fun, it can take months to make any real money. So, this isn’t a good option if you need side money today. For more info on how to start a mom blog, check out my post How to Start a Mom Blog Quickly and Easily.
Write a Book
I know that might sound a bit ridiculous, but just like blogging, writing a novel can be done in your free hours. Of course, the payoff can take some time too. A book can make you money for years to come, though.
I’ve written several books. It’s actually how I first started making real money online long before I started blogging to moms. As a fiction writer, my books are my escape from the everyday of being a stay at home mom. And, I still write today under the pen name S. L. Gavyn. You can check out my Amazon author page here.
If you don’t have the imagination for fiction, think of the subjects that you are knowledgeable in. Even if your biggest passion and knowledge comes from being a mom, chances are you have some information that other moms would want.
For example, a recent search on Amazon for Pregnancy and Childbirth books rendered 1,200 options. Sure, some of these books were written by healthcare professionals, but quite a few came from experienced mothers. Those books by other moms were mostly written as a way of comforting new moms during those ever-changing 9 months and beyond. I’ll tell you, during the last trimester with my first child, I was sick of reading what all the leading experts had to say about pregnancy. I enjoyed hearing other moms talk about their experiences. Knowing that they could do it raised my thoughts that I could, and would, be able to handle being a mom. And, each of those stories is uniquely different.
The process of writing and publishing a book is easier than you might think. Check out my post Selling a Book on Your Passion for a breakdown of the whole process. If you’re interested in writing for a living, check out my website slgavyn.com. I offer writing tips for everyone from novelists to bloggers.
While you could argue that this is a survey site, surveys aren’t the only way to make money on Mechanical Turk. If you’re not familiar with the site, it’s owned by Amazon, and it fulfills online needs for Mechanical Turk clients.
Say, a company wants to know where they rank on a particular Google search. They could search for themselves. Unless they had hundreds of employees and asked each one to do a search, they couldn’t know what the results would be. Enter Mechanical Turk. The company sets up a hit (what they call the individual jobs) and workers (you and anyone else who does hits for Mechanical Turk) do the searches, documenting the results. For the worker, the hit takes a few seconds to complete, and the company gets the statistics it wanted.
That’s just one example. There are tons of different hits available on Mechanical Turk. Some of them take only seconds while others take quite a bit longer and the pay ranges. The best part about this job is that, like blogging, you can work whenever you have the time. Unlike blogging though, you start making money immediately. (You get paid within 30 days of completing a hit.)
While it isn’t a career choice, it is a good way to make some side money while you’re, say, waiting for the kids in the car line or while the baby naps.
Sell Your Creativity
I don’t know a single mom who doesn’t have some creativity. Whether your passion is vinyl stickers or piñata making, chances are you’ve done it enough that you’ve got it down pat. Why not make money off doing something you like and you’re good at?
Start your own Etsy shop or sell on eBay. You could start by using up the supplies you already have. Once you’ve made enough money, invest in more supplies. Before you know it, you could have a lucrative business.
While I’ve never had an Etsy shop, I have sold hair bows on eBay. I used the leftover ribbon that I’d bought to make my daughter’s bows and managed to make back the money I’d spent on the ribbon plus some. I didn’t reinvest it and start a store because I was busy trying other ventures (blogging and book writing take up the bulk of my time), but I did make some extra money when I needed it.
- Combine Small Jobs to Earn Full-Time Income
Until I started making some money from writing and blogging, I started off doing various online jobs. Each of these jobs didn’t make me a whole lot. But combined, I was able to make a decent living working part-time hours. The pay was comparable to what I would make hourly at a job outside the home so while I wasn’t getting rich, they definitely helped. You can find all of these online jobs as well as hundreds more online jobs in my free eBook How to Become a Work-at-Home Mom Without Losing Your mind. Click here to download your copy.
Online Jobs I’ve Worked:
Website Testing – They usually pay between $8-$10 per test, but they don’t offer a lot of available tests. The key is to sign up with several companies and add the apps to your phone. Then you can do both web and mobile testing.
Transcription – You can also make some decent money from transcribing, but it’s kind of boring work. If you’re looking for a job that pays well and you can type pretty fast, this is a good one.
Data Entry – Basic data entry doesn’t pay much, but it’s a good way to get into online work. Be aware that there are a lot of scams in this field, though. I’ve included several legitimate sites in my eBook, so I suggest checking them out.
And that’s how I avoided being forced back into the rat race. If you are desperate to stay home with your kids, give these options a try. Once you find a few that you like and you can reliably make money from them, it’s time to take the leap.
